Dynea's proprietary fasil® process technology has been applied in more than fourty plants worldwide for a wide range of different downstream applications.
Fasil® plants produce formaldehyde for the manufacture of MDI, TMP, BDO, NPG, pentaerythritol, MMA, paraformaldehyde, hexamine, citral, and resins, including UF, MF, MUF and PF.

The chemical network of formaldehyde

Unlike methanol, formaldehyde is not considered a chemical commodity. Its limited shelf life in concentrated solutions and the high transport cost per unit of formaldehyde in diluted solutions restrict its distribution range. As a result, formaldehyde is typically not transported over distances greater than 500 km. Instead, formaldehyde is usually produced on-site where it is consumed, forming an integrated part of the downstream value chain.

The image below provides an overview of formaldehyde’s chemical network.

Formaldehyde demand by derivative

About two third of the global production of formaldehyde is consumed by resin production. The remaining one third is consumed by specialty chemicals production. Formaldehyde based resins are among others urea formaldehyde resins and concentrates, phenol formaldehyde resins, and melamine formaldehyde resins.

Formaldehyde based specialty chemicals are among others polyacetal plastics (POM), pentaerythritol, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, 1,4 butanediol, paraformaldehyde, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolethane, neopentyl glycol, citral, methyl methacrylate, and hexamine.

As such formaldehyde derivatives can be found in wood products, poly-urethane foams, paint, synthetics, household appliances, pesticides, plasticizers, plastics, explosives, and many more applications.
