Dynea and Durante & Vivan form hot melt joint venture

The Finnish adhesive resin producer Dynea and Italy’s Durante & Vivan, today announced a joint-venture to produce and distribute hot melts in Asian markets, including China. Shanghai based Durante Dynea Adhesive Co Ltd will open a manufacturing plant in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone on March 23rd. Through the joint-venture, Dynea gains entry to a new market segment, broadens its portfolio and improves its competitive position in the Asia Pacific region.

Durante Dynea responds to an increasing market demand for hot melts in the Asia Pacific region, due to the rapid growth of the furniture and flat panel wood industries. China is the largest furniture exporter in the world, and according to the Chinese Adhesive Association forecast, the total volume of adhesive used in China will reach 7.3 million tons in 2010, accounting an average increase of 11.5 % from 2005. The demand for hot melts is growing at an even faster rate.

“The joint-venture will have a strong position in the Asian hot melt industry with its superior expertise in hot melt technology and with Dynea’s decades of experience in the Asia Pacific region. As a result our ability to serve our customers in the Asia Pacific region is even further improved”, says Mr. Roger Carlstedt, Dynea President and CEO.

Dynea has produced adhesive resins for the interior wood application market in China with a wide range of product and service solutions for several years and has production in Shanghai, Beijing and Gaoyao City. Durante & Vivan has the technical, formulation and practical know-how regarding hot melt production and end-use applications together with state-of-the art production capabilities and equipment in the woodworking industry.

“The synergies and mutual efforts of the two companies are designed to support and serve the Asian woodworking and furniture industry with high quality, high performance and environmentally friendly products, leading-edge technology, and long-experienced technical service,” states Mr. Tarcisio Durante, President, Durante & Vivan.

The joint-venture will focus on serving customers in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, as well as all other countries in the Asia Pacific region.

About hot melts

Hot melt adhesives are solvent-free chemical compounds known as thermoplastics that are used to join materials. They are produced by combining synthetic binders and/or natural gums and waxes. Most hot melts are characteristically solid at temperatures below 180°F (82°C), and become low viscosity fluids at temperatures above 180°F. They are applied to a substrate after being heated and when in the fluid state. They can be repeatedly softened by heat and hardened or set by cooling, allowing parts to be removed or repositioned during assembly. They form strong bonds, set rapidly upon cooling, and are relatively easy to handle. In general, hot melt adhesives are more resistant to water, moisture, and humidity than thermoplastic polymers.

Today, hot melt adhesives are used in a variety of manufacturing processes, including furniture assembly, book binding and box and carton heat sealing. The furniture industry uses hot melt adhesives in edge-banding flat furniture and kitchen countertops. Hot melts are also used in profile-wrapping doors and window frames in the construction industry.

Dynea manufactures a broad range of hot melt adhesives in Asia and Europe. The adhesives are formulated for maximum performance in different climates and to meet the needs for a wide variety of applications. They are also designed to be used with modern equipment running at extremely fast speeds and provide hot tack (short initial bonding time) and fast setting (short permanent bonding time).
